Uncertainty is inevitable, but that doesn't mean you can't have resources in place to navigate it within your organization.
Having worked with leaders in regulated yet fast-changing industries, I have found there are 4 key resources that come in handy for managing uncertainty.
1. North Star Narrative - motivating, inspiring prose that translate's the organization's vision, mission and values into language that clearly defines the purpose and intent. Organizations that have a North Star Narrative are able to use it as their guide no matter the circumstances. Check out Johnson & Johnson's Credo
2. Agile Methodology - organizations who use agile project management are better poised to make the right decision when new information is available or the situation is rapidly changing. This isn't always possible in a regulated environment, but embracing an "expect the unexpected" mindset and agile tactics like iteration and collaboration, can prove essential. Read more from BCG
3. Learning Culture - As a client once told me, "if we're not evolving, we're failing." From operational improvements to growth mindsets, a learning culture always embraces the opportunity to do better. Uncertainty is often that opportunity. More from HBR.
4. Emotional Intelligence - Humans are not machines. Our emotions affect us. When uncertainty comes knocking, making space for our emotions and acknowledging their impact is critical. Emotional intelligence also allows us to know when to take a step back from the current moment and just breathe. That breath can be the difference between a great decision or a devastating one. These are a few of my favorite resources for managing uncertainty. What would you add?
