Narrative Strategy: Resources

I write this from my home in Los Angeles. The authoritarian military assault against peaceful protestors is at the forefront of my mind. My heart is full of horror and hope, trying to move with care through this absurd yet cruel reality. However, as someone who has devoted their life to using storytelling to create a better world, I am leaning into what I know, even when it feels insufficient. My practice of narrative strategy has mostly been in the contexts of organizations scaling new innovations. But that is just one facet. The best of narrative strategy is when we use it to craft our futures. We can embody the world we want through these new narratives. But how?
Narrative strategy is a resource for collective imagining, sense-making and action. It’s a way to combat the stories of harm and replace them with stories of repair. It’s an emergent practice, one that I am constantly learning from. And like many others, we know we need new narratives. We can start now. It will be messy, imperfect, and necessary.
I’m sharing a list of narrative strategy materials that have been helpful for me. I intend to revise this list, put it into a more accessible format that guides people through narrative strategy in a more methodical way, but for now, this will do. I have over 100+ resources I’ve collected and they will not all be relevant for this moment, but I hope what I share here will help you.
